Why insulate the attic floor?

Heat rises – to prevent unnecessary heat loss, one of the most financially rewarding energy efficient measures a home owner can take is to insulate their attic.

If modern guidelines are followed a 150mm layer of insulation should be placed between the timber joists running across the attic floor and another 150mm should be placed above this in a crossed format.

e.g. If the layers between the joists are layed east-west the crossed 2nd layer would be layed north-south.

Any more than this total 300mm insulation depth would be almost overkill as the effectivesness of additional insulation would be minimal and not likely to be cost effective.

Hemp/Lime Building

There are people who love the idea of using a hemp/lime mix to build houses. There are also people not so fond of the concept.

I spoke to one man who decided that he would use the age old method after much research into the building style and its benefits.

Rainwater Harvesting

Why harvest rainwater? ……………. Do we not have enough?

Definition of rainwater harvesting: The process of gathering rainwater to store and re-use.

Advantages

  • very environmentally friendly option
  • rainwater is better for water heating appliances
  • better for cleaning cars and watering gardens
  • more cost effective for toilet flushing
  • future proof against years of water rates*

The Irish people in the past collected rainwater in barrels at the bottom of their drain pipes. This water was then used for washing clothes, cleaning and in other household roles.
